Good Rolex watch care at home is mostly about simple habits: keep it clean, keep the crown screwed down, store it sensibly and keep it running. Watchfinder Canada and Watch Winders Canada (25 years in business, 17+ years in Yorkville) handle pre-owned Rolex regularly at our Toronto showroom, and in our experience the basics below make the biggest difference. This is a reworked edition of our Watchfinder Canada guide to Rolex maintenance, updated with Rolex's own service guidance and winder advice.

A note before we begin: Watchfinder Canada is an independent pre-owned dealer and is not an authorized Rolex dealer. For servicing, Rolex directs owners to Official Rolex Retailers and Service Centres.

Rolex Watch Care Basics

How to clean a Rolex

•Check that the crown is fully screwed down before any water touches the watch.

•Rinse the case and bracelet in lukewarm fresh water, especially after salt water or a pool.

•Use a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, such as a soft toothbrush, around the bezel, lugs and between bracelet links.

•Rinse again and dry with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth.

•Avoid solvents, abrasive polishes and ultrasonic cleaners at home.

A dedicated kit such as the Rapport Luxury Watch Cleaning Kit keeps the right cloth and brush in one place.

Crystal care

Rolex's sapphire crystals are highly scratch resistant, but they can chip if knocked on an edge. Avoid sudden temperature shocks, such as moving from a hot tub straight into cold water, which can stress seals and crystal alike.

Rolex Water Resistance and the Screw-Down Crown

Rolex Oyster cases are designed to be waterproof to their rated depth, but only when the crown is fully screwed down and the seals are in good condition. Never operate the crown underwater, and never adjust the watch when it is wet. Gaskets age, so water resistance should be checked whenever the watch is serviced, and sooner if you swim or dive with it regularly. During a full Rolex service, Rolex tests waterproofness after the case is reassembled.

Bracelet care

Oyster, Jubilee and President bracelets collect grime between the links, which can accelerate wear over time. A gentle brush and rinse every few weeks keeps them clean. Check the clasp occasionally to make sure it closes firmly, and if the bracelet feels loose or stretched, ask a watchmaker to assess it rather than tightening anything yourself.

What to Keep With Your Rolex

Keep the original box, warranty card or papers, purchase receipt and any service records together and somewhere safe. These documents support insurance claims and resale value, and they tell a watchmaker what has been done to the watch before. If you buy pre-owned, ask for the service history and keep a copy.

Rolex Service Interval

Rolex recommends servicing its watches approximately every ten years, depending on the model and real-life use. Rolex states that a complete service includes dismantling the movement, ultrasonically cleaning the components, replacing parts that no longer meet its specifications, lubrication, timing tests and waterproofness testing, and that it takes at least four to six weeks.

Have the watch checked sooner if it starts gaining or losing time noticeably, if the power reserve seems short, if moisture appears under the crystal, or if the crown feels rough.

Rolex Magnetism and Everyday Hazards

Rolex says its watches are designed for stable performance when exposed to everyday magnetic forces. Even so, it is sensible to keep any mechanical watch away from strong magnets such as speaker magnets, magnetic clasps on bags and tablet covers. A watch that suddenly runs fast may be magnetised; a watchmaker can check and demagnetise it.

Rolex Storage at Home

•Store the watch somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.

•Keep it in a lined box or on a winder, not loose in a drawer with keys or other watches.

•If you own several watches, give each its own slot to avoid scratches.

•Keep the box, papers and receipts somewhere safe for insurance and resale.

Should You Use a Watch Winder for Rolex?

If you wear your Rolex every day, you do not need one. Rolex quotes up to 72 hours of autonomy, so daily wear keeps it wound. If you rotate several watches or own a Day-Date or GMT-Master II you would rather not reset, a winder keeps it running and reduces crown use.

Rolex TPD setting

Rolex movements wind in both directions. Start at 650 turns per day, bidirectional, and increase to 800 only if the watch runs down after 48 hours. Our best watch winder for Rolex guide recommends specific models, including the WOLF British Racing Single with Storage and the Heisse & Söhne Toronto Single. You can also browse Wolf, Heisse & Söhne and Benson in our shop.

Make sure the crown is screwed down, rinse in lukewarm fresh water, use a drop of mild soap and a soft brush around the bezel and bracelet, rinse again and dry with a microfibre cloth.

Oyster cases are designed to be waterproof to their rated depth when the crown is fully screwed down and the seals are in good condition. Never operate the crown underwater, and have water resistance checked at service.
